Surgery went well.
Turns out I had shattered my 5th metatarsal in 5 places. Meaning, I am now the proud owner of 5 screws and a plate in my foot (see photo). Surgery was 2 hours with an hour post-op recovery. When I woke in post-op, I had the nurse administer my naturopathic pain medication following the previously written instructions. The hospital was great about respecting my wishes to not give me any more narcotics in my IV then necessary and no pain medication post-op. Unfortunately, about 2 hours after leaving the hospital, the pain began to increase tremendously to a place that intuitively I felt it would reach an uncontrollable level of pain. About 4 hours later and a great deal of moral debating about taking the pain pills, I decided I went through an unnatural procedure and I would need to take an unnatural remedy to help control the pain in the interim. And I would re-assess my condition daily. You never want to get behind the pain, so it felt like the best solution.
